There are multiple stories with different unlikely heroes explaining how Krakow came through
WWII nearly unscathed; but whatever the actual truth, Krakow showcases more than a
thousand years of culture and learning. As if a gorgeous castle weren’t enough, Krakow also
features a dragon’s cave directly under the impressive fortress and the bones of a dragon hang
at the door of the cathedral.
Krakow also has a very unique connection to the United States – the military hero Tadeusz
Kościuszko fought with the Continental Army during the revolutionary war, designing the
fortifications surrounding what is now the US Military Academy at West Point. Most of his
body is now in a crypt at Wawel Cathedral.
